3.29.17 MID-WEEK LENTEN SERVICE

3/29/2017

WELCOME The Israelites were commanded to observe the Sabbath, for God made the heavens and the earth in six days, and on the seventh day, He rested from all His work. They were to "put aside the work you do, So that God may work in you" (LSB 58:1-4). These Sabbaths all pointed to the One who is Himself "lord of the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:8). As God rested on the seventh day after His work of creation, Christ also rested in the tomb on the Sabbath Day after His work of redemption. Thus, Jesus is our true Sabbath Rest. He says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). In Him, all our labor ceases and we find "rest for our souls" (v. 29). Every week, we come to the Lord’s Table weary and burdened by sin and in need of rest and refreshment. And Jesus graciously grants us this rest for our souls in the Salutary Gift of His body and blood, as the hymn says: "Weary am I and heavy laden; With sin my soul is sore oppressed; Receive me graciously and gladden My heart, for I am now Thy guest" (LSB 618:4).

Saturday 5:30 p.m. we continue our "Catechism, Confession, and Communion" Service with a consideration of the 3rd Article of the Creed, that Article which teaches of the Holy Spirit, with our focus on "The Holy Christian Church, The Communion of Saints." This Service is particularly good for those folks who are unable to attend our regular 9:30 a.m. Sunday Divine Service and is a simple and effective way to engage with Luther's Small Catechism.

WELCOME! This week at CTK Bedford we find ourselves with Jesus and "the woman at the well". She’s a Samaritan woman and an outcast in the eyes of her neighbors. She comes to the well only when all the other village women have left so as to avoid their censure. But Jesus asks her for a drink of water. He is always engaging people with the Truth of Himself and doesn’t play favorites. After all, He’s come to seek and save the lost–thanks be to God! As He converses with the woman, Jesus reveals important Truth about Himself and the Salvation He brings. He gives the water of eternal life. Those who truly worship God the Father worship in spirit and truth. And God is seeking His people. Best of all, Jesus Himself is Messiah. He is the One sent by the Father to reveal all Truth, to do that which brings forgiveness and rebirth from above, to begin in each believer a "spring of water welling up to eternal life." Praise God for His mercy and love in Christ our King!
