WELCOME! "Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior, Turned away God’s wrath forever; By His bitter grief and woe He saved us from the evil foe" (LSB 627:1). These words remind us that in Christ’s substitutionary death on Good Friday, the wrath of God on account of our sins was forever turned away since it was poured out upon His innocent Son on the cross. As Isaiah says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). Through our participation in the sacrificial banquet of the Lord’s Supper, we enjoy the benefits of Christ’s death on Calvary; pardon and remission of all our sins. There, the Father turns His face to us in love, not in wrath, as our merciful and faithful high priest, Jesus Christ, gives His own flesh and blood for us Christians to eat and to drink. Just as Christ prayed to His Father from the cross that He would forgive His enemies, so also does our Lord pray for us in the presence of His Father: "Forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).
