WELCOME The Israelites were commanded to observe the Sabbath, for God made the heavens and the earth in six days, and on the seventh day, He rested from all His work. They were to "put aside the work you do, So that God may work in you" (LSB 58:1-4). These Sabbaths all pointed to the One who is Himself "lord of the Sabbath" (Matthew 12:8). As God rested on the seventh day after His work of creation, Christ also rested in the tomb on the Sabbath Day after His work of redemption. Thus, Jesus is our true Sabbath Rest. He says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). In Him, all our labor ceases and we find "rest for our souls" (v. 29). Every week, we come to the Lord’s Table weary and burdened by sin and in need of rest and refreshment. And Jesus graciously grants us this rest for our souls in the Salutary Gift of His body and blood, as the hymn says: "Weary am I and heavy laden; With sin my soul is sore oppressed; Receive me graciously and gladden My heart, for I am now Thy guest" (LSB 618:4).
